In historical times several kingdoms were in control of the territory that is now the present state, including the Mon and the Shan Kingdoms, but also the Burmese. In the 19th century Burma was occupied gradually by the English and until 1897 was part of the Union of States of British India. After temporary occupation by the Japanese during World War II, Burma obtained its independence on January 4, 1948 and became an independent Republic.
