Buffalo Nickels

INDIAN HEAD or BUFFALO TYPE 1913-1938

These coins are referred to as Buffalo, Bison or Indian Head nickels. Two separate varieties were minted in the first year of issue, 1913. The first showed the bison on a mound, and the second had the base redesigned to a straight line.

Designer James Earl Fraser; weight 5 grams; composition: .750 copper, .250 nickel; diameter 21.2 mm; plain edge; mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco.
