The Mohammedan sultanate on the north coast of the Island of Borneo was still so powerful in the early 19th century that the Sultan of Brunei was considered as the Sultan of Borneo, resulting in the name of the whole island of Borneo having been formed from the name Brunei. On January 1, 1984 the sultanate became independent.
