The Chartered British North Borneo Company, formed on November 1, 1881, existed as the only administering colonial company of this territory into the 20th century. Its power was dissolved on July 15, 1946. In exercising its rights the company was hampered due to the disastrous consequences of World War II, at which time the Japanese government exerted real rule for the period of 1942-1945. After this period the British military administration took control. To the Crown Colony of British North Borneo, the small island of Labuan was added after the severance of the administrative connection with the Straits Settlements which had existed since the thirties. With the rived name “Sabah”, North Borneo joined the new state of Malaysia as a founding member on September 16, 1963 and together with Sarawak constitutes the territory of East Malaysia.
