Under the name of Bechuanaland it was a British Protectorate since 1885; obtaining internal autonomy in 1965. Since September 30th, 1966 this African country has been an independent Republic named Botswana.

100 Cents = 1 Rand; since August 23rd, 1976: 100 Thebe = 1 Pula

Until November 30th, 1976 Botswana belonged to the monetary area of the South African Rand.
