Since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the territory of Belgium as we know it today was part of the kingdom of the United Low Countries. Following the revolution of September 1830, the Belgians obtained their independence and elected Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg as their king. In 1921 Belgium entered into an economic union and monetary agreement with Luxembourg.
