Barbados (Coins)

Area: 165 square miles                                                           Population: 266,640

The most eastern of the Lesser Antilles. Discovered in 1519 by the Spaniards, Barbados has been a British possession since 1625. The colonial status came to an end when independence was proclaimed on November 30, 1966. Barbados is a member of the Caribbean Free Trade Area (CARIFTA). It is linked with the countries of Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis and Anquilla, St. Lucia and St. Vincent to form the Monetary Union of East Caribbean Dollar. The issuing authority of this monetary unit is the East Caribbean Currency Authority with headquarters in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Commemorative issue for the inauguration of the Caribbean Development Bank and the FAO Coin Plan. Obverse arms with shield bearers and ornamented helmet. Rev. bananas, sugar-cane and value. Choice coin with minimal marks and soft satin luster. Hint of attractive gold at very rim edge adds beauty. Tough coin to find this nice. (View image for more detail.)
