Upon the partition of British India based on the British law of independence, West Bengal came under Indian rule, and East Bengal became part of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. With the aid of Indian troops the independence of Bangladesh (Land of the Bengalis), was proclaimed on December 17th, 1971.
