Algeria (Coins)

Area: 916,150 square miles                                             Population: 22,000,000

In ancient times this area was part of the Roman Providence of Numidia and Mauretania Caesariensis. In the 5th century A.D. it belonged to the Vandalic Empire and towards to the end of the 7th century the area was conquered by the Arabs. The country was then ruled by the Beys of Algeria who had been chosen as sovereigns by the Turkish Janissaries, until the French conquered Algiers in 1830. Later it became a French Department; then, since July 1962 an independent republic and finally a People’s Republic since September 15, 1963.
